Twelve palaces, not four pillars

Where BaZi reduces you to eight characters and reads their elemental interaction, Zi Wei Dou Shu builds a wheel of twelve palaces, each governing a domain of life: 命宮 Life, 財帛 Wealth, 官祿 Career, 夫妻 Spouse, 疾厄 Health, 遷移 Travel and so on.

Stars are then placed into those palaces. The 14 major stars carry the weight of the reading; dozens of minor stars modulate it. A star is not good or bad in isolation — 七殺 in the Career palace reads very differently from 七殺 in the Spouse palace.

Reading a palace

Start with 命宮, the Life palace: the stars there describe your fundamental disposition. Then read the palace that matches your question. Each palace also has an opposite palace directly across the wheel, and the two are read together — Wealth is always read against Fortune, Career against Spouse.

The four transformations — 化祿, 化權, 化科, 化忌 — mark which stars are amplified, empowered, given reputation, or obstructed. 化忌 in particular is where the chart tells you what will be hard.

Zi Wei or BaZi?

Practitioners generally use both. BaZi is stronger on timing and on the elemental remedy — what to do and when. Zi Wei is stronger on domain and character — what an area of life will feel like and who you are inside it. Reading them together is standard practice, and they should broadly agree.

Common questions

Do I need my birth time for this one?

Yes, more than for BaZi. The Life palace is set by the birth hour, so an unknown hour shifts the entire wheel. An estimate within a two-hour block is usually enough.

Why do star names sound so dramatic?

They are borrowed from imperial court roles and mythic figures — Emperor, General, Commander. The drama is in the naming convention, not in a prediction of a dramatic life.

Which school is this?

The chart follows the 三合 San He placements, the most widely taught lineage, with the four transformations applied.
