Palmistry (手相 / 掌紋學) is among the oldest divination arts, practiced in China, India and the ancient Mediterranean for thousands of years. The Chinese tradition reads the three major lines (生命線, 智慧線, 感情線), the fate and wealth lines, the mounts (丘), and the hand's Five-Element shape. By custom one reads the left hand for what is innate, the right for what you have made (男左女右).

Three lines and eight mounts
Chinese palmistry reads three principal lines — 天紋 the heaven line, 人紋 the human line and 地紋 the earth line, roughly corresponding to heart, head and life in Western palmistry — together with eight mounts named for the trigrams of the bagua.
The hand’s overall shape is read first: a broad square palm with short fingers is read very differently from a long narrow palm with tapered fingers, regardless of what the lines do.
Which hand?
The convention taught most widely is 男左女右 — left hand for men, right for women — with the other hand read as the acquired or developed self. Many practitioners now read both and compare, treating the dominant hand as the life being lived and the other as the life given.

Which hand should I read?
Start with the traditional one for your gender, then compare the other. The difference between them is often the most interesting part.
Does a short life line mean a short life?
No — and this is the single most common misreading. The line is read for vitality and constitution, not for duration.
Do lines change?
Minor lines do, over years. The three principal lines are largely stable.
