Character Divination 測字
測字 answers a question by taking apart a single Chinese character. Write one down while holding your question, and the reading splits it into components and reads the result.
The Character Oracle
An ancient art (Song dynasty, 邵雍 & 謝石): hold your question in mind, then let a single Chinese character come to you. Its radicals, structure and strokes reveal the answer. 一字定乾坤。
How 測字 works · 拆字之法
- Hold one sincere question in your heart, then choose or write the first character that comes to you — the choice itself is the oracle.
- 拆字 — split the character into its radicals and components; each part carries meaning (e.g. 財 = 貝 money + 才 talent).
- Read its structure — what sits above/below, inside/outside, and whether the form feels whole or broken.
- Strokes & element (五行) add nuance; the reading is then applied to your specific question.
- 一事一字 — one character per question; let it settle before asking again.
測字 is an interpretive art — a mirror for reflection, not a fixed prophecy. For guidance & reflection.

Divination by dismantling
測字 — glyph divination — is a scholar’s oracle. You offer one character; the diviner decomposes it into radicals and strokes, recombines the parts, notes what other characters are hidden inside it, and reads the answer from the structure.
It is genuinely native to written Chinese: the method depends on characters being built from meaningful components, so it has no real equivalent in alphabetic scripts.
How to choose a character
Do not pick a character that describes the answer you want. The tradition asks you to write the first character that arrives while the question is held clearly in mind — and it treats a deliberated choice as a spoiled one.
Common questions
Can I use a simplified character?
Yes, and the reading will note where the traditional form carries components the simplified form has lost — which is often where the answer sits.
What if I don’t write Chinese?
Choose from the offered set. The reading works the same way.
Can I ask about anything?
One question, clearly held. The oracle is poor at compound and hypothetical questions.
