Beat the Petty Person 打小人
The Hong Kong street rite for dealing with a 小人 — the gossip, the saboteur, the colleague who undermines you. Name them, strike the paper effigy with the shoe, and recite the 口訣.
Beat the Petty Person
打 小 人
Backstabbers, gossips, office politics, bad luck that won't lift — name your 小人, strike the paper effigy to drive the negativity away, then welcome your benefactor 貴人. A traditional ritual of release, performed under the Canal Road flyover in Hong Kong for generations.
習俗與禁忌 · Customs & Cautions
- 心平氣和,意在化解晦氣 — keep a calm heart; the aim is to release bad energy, not to truly harm.

- 打完祭白虎、化小人、求貴人 — after beating, feed 虎爺, burn the paper, then invite your benefactor 貴人.
- 孕婦不宜進行,亦不可以孕婦為對象 — pregnant women should not perform it, and never target a pregnant person.
- 不可指名無辜之人,須保持象徵 — don’t name an innocent; keep it symbolic.
- 不可帶真恨而行 — don’t act out of real hatred.
- 完事勿回頭,拍去晦氣 — when done, don’t dwell; dust off the bad luck and walk on.

A light-hearted folk ritual for releasing negative energy and inviting good fortune — not a wish of real harm to anyone. For reflection & cultural enjoyment.
What a 小人 is
小人 xiǎorén translates poorly as “petty person”. It means specifically the person who works against you quietly — spreading rumour, taking credit, blocking you where you cannot see it. Chinese folk practice takes this seriously enough to have a dedicated rite for it.
The ritual is performed publicly under the Canal Road flyover in Hong Kong, most intensively at 驚蟄 Jīngzhé, the waking of insects, when the pests of the year are said to stir.
The rite
A paper effigy stands for the 小人. The practitioner strikes it repeatedly with a shoe while reciting the 口訣 — a rhythmic incantation naming what is being driven away. 虎爺 the Tiger General is then fed with fatty pork so that he devours the villain’s mouth, and a paper 貴人 noble person is invoked in their place.
The full 口訣 is given here in Cantonese with an English translation, and the audio is licensed for use.
Do’s and don’ts
Do name the behaviour rather than wishing harm on the person — the tradition distinguishes sharply between driving off obstruction and cursing. Don’t perform it in anger you haven’t examined. Don’t perform it against someone whose only offence is disagreeing with you.
Common questions
Is this cursing someone?
No, and practitioners are firm on the distinction. The rite drives away obstruction and invites a noble person in. It is not a hex, and it should not be performed as one.
When should I do it?
驚蟄 is traditional — early March. Otherwise, when it’s needed.
Do I need to name a specific person?
No. It can be performed against unnamed obstruction, and often is.
