History & feast day · 簡介
Confucius (孔子, 551–479 BC), honored as 至聖先師 (“the Supreme Sage and First Teacher”), is China’s greatest philosopher and the patron of learning. His teachings on virtue, family and study, gathered in the Analects (論語), shaped East Asia for 2,500 years. Students and parents pray at Confucius temples (文廟) before examinations for clear thinking and success.
八月廿七 · 孔子聖誕 — Confucius’ birthday (Teachers’ Day, ~Sept 28); honor him and pray for success in study and exams.
A devotional altar for guidance & reflection.
The teacher
Confucius is venerated not as a god who intervenes but as the exemplary teacher. The 文廟 Confucian temples are places of respect and study rather than petition, and the tone here reflects that.
Students across East Asia visit before major examinations. His feast, the twenty-seventh day of the eighth lunar month, is marked as Teachers’ Day in Taiwan.
Offerings
Celery for diligence, spring onion for cleverness, and — a modern touch — the student’s own study plan.
Common questions
Is Confucianism a religion?
Contested, and reasonable people differ. In practice the temples function devotionally while the doctrine is ethical and social.
What is petitioned for?
Clarity, diligence, and success in examinations.
Why celery?
芹 qín puns on 勤, diligence. Chinese offering symbolism runs heavily on puns.
